1. Roman Catholic Church - The branch of Christianity headed by a pope. It is governed by a hierarchy with a pope at the top

3. Cardinal - A leading dignitary of the Roman Catholic Church, nominated by a pope

4. Archbishop - The chief bishop responsible for an archdiocese

5. Bishop - A senior member of the Christian clergy

6. Priest - An ordained minister of the Catholic

7. Monk - A member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty

8. Nun - A member of a religious community of women typically living under vows of poverty

9. Clergy - The body of all people ordained for religious duties

10. Cathedral - The principal church of a diocese, with which the bishop is officially associated

11. Church - A building used for public Christian worship

12. Monastery - A building or buildings occupied by a community of monks living under religious vows

13. Mendicant - Given to begging

23. Matrimony - The ceremony of being married

24. Holy Orders - The sacrament or rite of ordination as a member of the Christina clergy

25. Penance - Voluntary self-punishment inflicted as an outward expression of repentance for wrong doings

26. Extreme Unction - A former name for the sacrament of anointing of the sick, especially when administered to the dying

Day 4



Vocabulary


  1.  Town-  an urban area that has a name, defined boundaries, and local government, and that is generally larger than a village and smaller than a city.
  2.  Charter- a written grant by a country's legislative or sovereign power, by which an institution such as a company, college, or city is created and its rights and privileges defined.
  3.  Guild-  a medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power.
  4.  Guild Hall- a building used as the meeting place of a guild or corporation.
  5.  Journeyman- a trained worker who is employed by someone else.
  6.  Apprentice- a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages.
  7.  Merchant- a person or company involved in wholesale trade, especially one dealing with foreign countries or supplying merchandise to a particular trade.
  8.  Barter- exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money.
  9.  Carpenter- a person who makes and repairs wooden objects and structures.
  10.  Cobbler- a person who mends shoes as a job.
  11. Glover- a person who makes or sells gloves.
  12.  Blacksmith- a person who makes and repairs things in iron by hand.
  13.  Tinker- (especially in former times) a person who travels from place to place mending metal utensils as a way of making a living.
  14.  Potter- British term for putter3.
  15.  Cooper- a maker or repairer of casks and barrels.
  16.  Wheel right (wheeler)- a vehicle having a specified number of wheels.
  17.  Tanner- a person who tans animal hides, especially to earn a living.
  18.  Weaver- a person who weaves fabric.
  19.  Baker- a person who makes bread and cakes, especially commercially.
  20.  Butcher- a person whose trade is cutting up and selling meat in a shop.
  21.  Inn- an establishment providing accommodations, food, and drink, especially for travelers.
  22.  Tavern-  an establishment for the sale of beer and other drinks to be consumed on the premises, sometimes also serving food.
  23.  Barber- a person who cuts hair, especially men's, and shaves or trims beards as an occupation.
  24.  Fuller- a person who fulls cloth.
  25.  Miller-  a person who owns or works in a grain mill.
  26.  Brewer- To make (ale or beer) from malt and hops by infusion, boiling, and fermentation. 2. To make (a beverage) by boiling, steeping, or mixing various ingredients: brew tea. 3. To concoct; devise: brew a plot to overthrow the government.
  27.  Stable- not likely to change or fail; firmly established.
  28.  Craft guild- an association of workers of the same trade for mutual benefit.
  29.  Merchant guild-  Guilds /ɡɪlds/ were and are associations of artisans or merchants who control the practice of their craft in a particular town. The earliest types of guild were formed as confraternities of tradesmen.
  30.  Wattle and daub- a material formerly or traditionally used in building walls, consisting of a network of interwoven sticks and twigs covered with mud or clay.

Fiefdom project 

Day 1

What should the Fiefdom project include?The Fiefdom project will include vocabulary words.It will also include questions about the video we watched in class.Day 1 will be this introduction and the vocabulary words.Day 2 and 3 will include the questions and answers about the video.That is what you will see included in day 1,2,and 3.


Vocabulary


  1.  Fiefdom- a fief.
  2. Feudalism- the dominant social system in medieval Europe, in which the nobility held lands from the Crown in exchange for military service, and vassals were in turn tenants of the nobles, while the peasants (villeins or serfs) were obliged to live on their lord's land and give him homage, labor, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for military protection.
  3. Monarch- a sovereign head of state, especially a king, queen, or emperor.
  4. Lord- someone or something having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler.
  5. Vassal- a holder of land by feudal tenure on conditions of homage and allegiance.
  6. Knight- (in the Middle Ages) a man who served his sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor.
  7. Peasant- a poor farmer of low social status who owns or rents a small piece of land for cultivation (chiefly in historical use or with reference to subsistence farming in poorer countries).
  8. Commoner- an ordinary person, without rank or title.
  9. Serf- an agricultural laborer bound under the feudal system to work on his lord's estate.
  10. Tradesman- a person engaged in trading or a trade, typically on a relatively small scale.
  11. Merchant- a person or company involved in wholesale trade, especially one dealing with foreign countries or supplying merchandise to a particular trade.
  12. Castle- a large building or group of buildings fortified against attack with thick walls, battlements, towers, and in many cases a moat.
  13. Moat- a deep, wide ditch surrounding a castle, fort, or town, typically filled with water and intended as a defense against attack.
  14. Guild- a medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power.
  15. Abbey- the building or buildings occupied by a community of monks or nuns.
  16. High Middle Ages- The High Middle Ages or High Medieval Period was the period of European history around the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries (c. 1001–1300). 
  17. 100 Year's War- Hundred YearsWar definition. A war between France and England that lasted from the middle of the fourteenth century to the middle of the fifteenth. The kings of England invaded France, trying to claim the throne.
         18. Black Death- The Black Death was an epidemic outbreak of bubonic plague in Europe around 1348 that killed between one-third and two-thirds of the population in less than five years. 


Day 2



1. Who were the people dependent upon?
The people dependent upon were lord of the manner.

2. Where did they choose to build? And why?
They choose to build out crap of rock extending into water,because provide the best natural defense,river.Provides escape and route.

3. What was the first ring of the castle called?
The first ring of the castle was called Outer Curtain Wall.

4. How long will the walls be on the outer curtain?
The walls on the outer curtain will be 300 ft long on each of its sides.

5. How thick was the inner curtain? How high?
The thickness of the inner curtain was 12 ft and 35 ft high.

6. Whats the center of the inner ward?
The center of the inner ward is the living guaters apartments.

7. How many entrances in the town wall? How are they protected?
There are 3 entrances in the town wall. They are protected by double low gate houses.

8. Why did people move to towns?
The people moved to towns because they were forced to work or they wanted to build a house and start a family.


Day 3


9. What are the walls filled with?
The walls are filled with rubble.

10. How are the windows designed,starting from the bottom to the top of the towers?
The bottom is small enough,so enemies and soldiers cant climb through, all windows are protected by iron grills, the inside in kings apartment is fitted with glass.

11. What are the crenulations used for?
The crenulations are used for so an archer fines arrow defense from two directors in the same position.

12. Why are the gate houses not lined up from the inner to the outer ward?
The gate houses are not lined up from inner to the outer ward because when enemy soldiers get through outer gate houses, they'd have to go across the defenders when going to inner.

13. How are the tower levels divided?
The tower levels are divided by three levels first level (basement level) for storage second level  is for supplies third level is for living or working space.

14. What defenses are in a gate house?
The differences in a gate house are a draw bridge heavy timber court calius, wooden doors, arrow hoops, and mooder holes.

15. What are the buildings made from?
The buildings are made from slate roof spaces between timber are filled with water.

16. What lives on the bottom floor of the barracks, on the top is his lady hoble guest and on bottom floor. Basement of barracks was for stable.

17. What is a garderobe?

A  garderobe is a bathroom.
