Vocabulary
- Town- an urban area that has a name, defined boundaries, and local government, and that is generally larger than a village and smaller than a city.
- Charter- a written grant by a country's legislative or sovereign power, by which an institution such as a company, college, or city is created and its rights and privileges defined.
- Guild- a medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power.
- Guild Hall- a building used as the meeting place of a guild or corporation.
- Journeyman- a trained worker who is employed by someone else.
- Apprentice- a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages.
- Merchant- a person or company involved in wholesale trade, especially one dealing with foreign countries or supplying merchandise to a particular trade.
- Barter- exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money.
- Carpenter- a person who makes and repairs wooden objects and structures.
- Cobbler- a person who mends shoes as a job.
- Glover- a person who makes or sells gloves.
- Blacksmith- a person who makes and repairs things in iron by hand.
- Tinker- (especially in former times) a person who travels from place to place mending metal utensils as a way of making a living.
- Potter- British term for putter3.
- Cooper- a maker or repairer of casks and barrels.
- Wheel right (wheeler)- a vehicle having a specified number of wheels.
- Tanner- a person who tans animal hides, especially to earn a living.
- Weaver- a person who weaves fabric.
- Baker- a person who makes bread and cakes, especially commercially.
- Butcher- a person whose trade is cutting up and selling meat in a shop.
- Inn- an establishment providing accommodations, food, and drink, especially for travelers.
- Tavern- an establishment for the sale of beer and other drinks to be consumed on the premises, sometimes also serving food.
- Barber- a person who cuts hair, especially men's, and shaves or trims beards as an occupation.
- Fuller- a person who fulls cloth.
- Miller- a person who owns or works in a grain mill.
- Brewer- To make (ale or beer) from malt and hops by infusion, boiling, and fermentation. 2. To make (a beverage) by boiling, steeping, or mixing various ingredients: brew tea. 3. To concoct; devise: brew a plot to overthrow the government.
- Stable- not likely to change or fail; firmly established.
- Craft guild- an association of workers of the same trade for mutual benefit.
- Merchant guild- Guilds /ɡɪlds/ were and are associations of artisans or merchants who control the practice of their craft in a particular town. The earliest types of guild were formed as confraternities of tradesmen.
- Wattle and daub- a material formerly or traditionally used in building walls, consisting of a network of interwoven sticks and twigs covered with mud or clay.
